The Season for Loving
What does it mean to love?
What does it mean to see another’s face and know that above all faces, we would choose this one to be before us? How do we show another, tender heart that it is theirs that we choose to honor, to find stride alongside, to soften with the giving of our palms?
The world has challenged us in the last two years to withdraw from that which is expected, that which is “normal,” and swim through waters previously untreaded. It has questioned our motives, our habits, our reflexes, and called us to see our intentions with unmasked honesty.
Perhaps pause – what images does Valentine’s Day conjure for you? Does it inspire feelings of joy and warmth, or perhaps anxiety, obligation, or banality?
While the origins of Valentine are many and varied, most of us can agree to greet this day as an opportunity to show our loved ones their dearness to us. Maybe this does not have to reside solely with a lover or romantic partner. The sphere of “loved one” is vast, stretching beyond who we see as lovers to those other loves that wrap their arms around our hearts: parents, children, friends, colleagues. Consider the loved one you have in mind – how will you choose to show them how truly special they are to you?
Give roses to those who beam at their velvet. A wildflower bouquet for the one who sprawls beneath the sun, or a cactus for those needing reminders of their resilience. From soaps, to favorite snacks, to incenses and gift cards, it is the intention that carries the magic. Remember that, when passed from one hand to another, even the smallest token, such as a colorful felt heart, represents much more than the sum of its materials – it represents the sentiment, “Here. I was thinking of you. I hope to keep close to you. I love you.”
Here are a few of our favorites to help you celebrate love this year:
