Why We Can't Quit Hibiscus

Why We Can't Quit Hibiscus

Vibrant hibiscus flowers have been used for centuries in herbalism. Today we understand that hibiscus is especially effective in skincare, because it contains both vitamin C and flavonoid co-factors. The flavonoids help keep vitamin C stable and beneficial and also enhance its absorption into the skin. Vitamin C improves overall skin texture and strengthens our skin's response to the sun. Some of our favorite products, including Laurel's Hydrating Elixer I and Josh Rosebrook's Daily Acid Toner, contain hibiscus for these beneficial properties.

When taken internally, our bodies can use hibiscus's vitamin C content for healing, to protect against cell damage and to form muscle and collagen. Hibiscus has long been valued for its cooling properties in Ayurveda, so we embrace all of this by drinking it icy cold in the warmer months. It makes a delicious tart-but-sweet tea on its own or in a mixed herbal tea (like the one we serve in our spa). We like cold brewing it overnight for a juicy, hydrating, thirst quencher all summer long.

Our newest whole plant facial celebrates the benefits of hibiscus in concert with camu camu, rosehips, papaya, sea buckthorn and turmeric that promise to smooth skin texture and restore luminosity.
