Knowing the Niyamas: Satisfied with Santosha
As we fall into a season branded on gratitude and giving, we also head into a period of longer nights and colder days. While flipping through summer photos may surface a nostalgia of warmer times, the best way to embrace the shift of the seasons is to fully step into the change and become content with the ways of winter.
Santosha, the second of Patanjali’s Niyamas or observances of life, expresses contentment as satisfaction. This does not mean to dismiss the misfortunes in your life, but to see them as they are while innately knowing everything will be ok. Whether a job or a relationship withers away, santosha is understanding your worth, your power, your love and ability to hold your ground until that next opportunity or person comes into your life.
When we are content, we are at peace. Practicing peace in your career means to show up everyday with enthusiasm despite that happenings of yesterday. Peace in a relationship may look like forgiveness for someone you have been holding negativity around, and journaling away any resentment to lead you into a place of acceptance. The same practice can be applied to any negativity you may hold for yourself, as the simple act of writing allows feelings to be embraced before they become at ease.
Show a little santosha for your home with a beeswax candle and the “Easy Like Sunday Morning” crystal kit. By creating a cozy space, you can live in a peaceful place. Light your intentions each time you come to your candle, imagining your own heat sparking a flame into your home. The grounding stones of amethyst, lepidolite, celestite and green calcite are miraculous tools for meditation as they can help you see what is, accept what is, and be satisfied with all of the above.
