A Guide to Pre and Post-Care for Your Derma (Chemical) Peel
At HAND & LAND, we believe in nurturing your skin from the inside out while creating space for self-care and rejuvenation. Our new corrective chemical peels offer personalized solutions for improving skin tone, texture, and radiance. To ensure you get the most out of your peel and maintain your skin’s health, proper pre- and post-care is essential. Here's everything you need to know to prepare for and recover from your peel.
What Is a Corrective Derma Peel?
Our peels are designed to address various skin concerns, from fighting acne and reducing fine lines to brightening your complexion and resurfacing sun damage. Using gentle but effective ingredients, such as lactic acid for hydration or glycolic acid for exfoliation, each peel is tailored to your unique skin needs.
Pre-Care: Setting Your Skin Up for Success
-
Avoid Exfoliating Products (7-10 Days Before)
Skip products with retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, or physical scrubs in the week leading up to your peel. Over-exfoliation can increase sensitivity and disrupt your skin barrier. -
Hydrate Your Skin
Use a gentle, nourishing moisturizer to maintain hydration levels and fortify your skin's barrier. -
Minimize Sun Exposure
Protect your skin by avoiding prolonged sun exposure and applying SPF daily. Sunburned or overly tanned skin is more prone to irritation. -
Hold Off on Certain Treatments
Avoid waxing, laser treatments, or other facial procedures (e.g., microdermabrasion) in the two weeks leading up to your peel. -
Communicate with Your Esthetician
Be open about any medications, allergies, or recent skin treatments during your consultation. This helps us select the best peel for your skin type and needs.
Post-Care: Supporting Your Skin’s Recovery
-
Keep It Gentle
Use a mild cleanser and avoid exfoliants for at least 5-7 days post-peel. Your skin will be sensitive, so stick to products that focus on soothing and hydrating. -
Sun Protection Is a Must
Your skin will be more vulnerable to sun damage after a peel. Wear SPF daily and reapply throughout the day if you’ll be outdoors. Avoid direct sun exposure as much as possible for at least two weeks. -
Avoid Touching or Picking
Flaking or peeling is a normal part of the process. Resist the urge to pick at your skin to prevent irritation or scarring. -
Skip Heat and Sweating
Avoid hot showers, saunas, and vigorous exercise for 48 hours post-treatment to reduce inflammation and irritation. -
Delay Retinoids and Actives
Hold off on retinoids, AHAs, and BHAs for at least one week post-peel to prevent over-sensitizing your skin.
Why Pre- and Post-Care Matter
Taking care of your skin before and after a derma peel ensures:
- Optimal results with improved texture and tone.
- Reduced risk of irritation or unwanted side effects.
- Prolonged benefits of your treatment.
